i'm new to D and would like to read up on any api documentation available. i come from a java background so possibly a javadoc equivalent..

When you say API, I assume you mean documentation on the semi-standard library Phobos which is included with the D compiler. If so, you could read up on it at http://www.digitalmars.com/d/phobos.html
It may be incomplete in areas.
Another powerful library to look at is mango. It has plenty of documentation which you can find here

Thanks for the info on the api docs! the mango lib seems to cover its apis much better than the core (semi-standard) library docs.
