I've ported Empire to MinWin so that it now runs pretty well on Motif and GTK on Linux. See the web page for screen shots
http://home.comcast.net/~benhinkle/minwin/

What I'm waiting for is some OK from Walter to show people the source. But until he replies I'm writing documentation and examples for the web page to explain how MinWin works.

Plus I gotta get started on that Mac port...

Hmmm... yeah. Me too. I never did figure out why it was supposed to be so addictive.

I played an old Mac version called Strategic Conquest like crazy long ago. It was almost exactly the same game and it is pretty much the same as modern strategy games where you have to expand like crazy to get enough capacity and resources to overwhelm the opponent. A great game. The only complaint I had about Strat Con was that it would crash if you and your opponent had too many pieces in play. Just when my friend and I were about to face off against each other with these massive armies the darn thing would crash.

I understand why it can be addictive, as John said: I really like FreeCiv (even if I can never win), and I enjoy those kind of games. But I just don't understand Empire.
