Seems like dsource is starting to attract more spam ... that's the second porno link posted in the Mango forum in as many days.

I'm wondering if phpBB has a 'stronger' method of rejecting Bot-accounts? For instance, does it have one of those "type in the characters you see in the picture" kind of tests? Or is there anything else that might help?

Do you mean "Captcha". Apparently it's supported for some versions of phpbb:

http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum103/274.htm

Code:

3. Modifications you can make

There are some changes you can make to your phpbb installation to better secure it against attack by spambots, automated signups, etc. This is not a comprehensive list:

3.1 captcha image verification

phpbb version 2.0.11 onwards uses the captcha image verification system which requires a new member to enter a set of letters and numbers from a generated image before being able to sign up. Switch it on in the Admin Control Panel under in the Configuration menu (thanks to androidtech for the reminder). If and only if you have a significant membership comprising the visually-disabled, then there are mods available to slightly alter the signup process enough to fool most bots. This will kill automated signups stone dead. You will still have the problem of manual spam signups, but we're getting to that... ;)

I've asked Brad about this already... Confused

I believe he's holding out until we can move everything to track.

For now, I guess we'll just try to stay on top of this spam... grrrrr Mad

PS. The spambots appear to have a real afinity for Mango!

captcha is activated, but I'm not sure if phpBB's version can be defeated or not.

I am indeed waiting for forums to move over to Trac, but in the meantime, we have a recent-ish version of phpBB and these spammers are doing it manually, as far as I can tell. Mango is the first forum, after all.

It is quite possible that they are doing it manually. Come to think of it, I would expect to see a flood of spam if it were done by a spambot.
