two instances of Atomic

Description

A second version of Atomic was added a while back, presumably obsoleting the prior one. This means the prior one has to be deprecated, internal imports of the old one updated & modified as needed, and documentation added to the wiki about breaking changes. This should be done for the impending release, so we can focus solely on bug-fixes for the 1.0 release.

There's not two Atomic modules in the current trunk, so this ticket should be about improving the Atomic module, maybe using Fawzi's version as a cue.
